Members of Academic Staff Union of Universities are divided over who becomes the next Vice Chancellor of Obafemi Awolowo University.
Obafemi Awolowo University has been in crisis since the process for emergence of a new Vice Chancellor was kick-started with suspicion of foul play from various quarters.
Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities, OAU Chapter and Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities had taken Governing Council of Obafemi Awolowo University to court over what they termed lack of due process in selection of the tentative Vice Chancellor, in person of Prof Ayobami Salami.
Chairman of ASUU described the process that led to the emergence of Prof Salami as Vice Chancellor “Flawless” and condemned the protest of NASU, terming it illegal.
In a dramatic turn of events however, at a press conference in the NUJ Correspondent Chapel secretariat in Osogbo on Tuesday, a member of ASUU, Professor Adegbola Peter Akinola of Mathematics Department accompanied by Professors of the University said that the interview and process that produced Prof. Salami as OAU VC was inaccurate and full of lies. The members of ASUU led by Prof Peter maintained that Aborisade misrepresented the union(ASUU) on the VC’s appointment.
The aggrieved members alleged that no congress was held where process that led to emergence of Prof Salami as VC was adjudged to be free and fair.
ASUU Chairman Dr Aborisade Caleb has however maintained the stance that the processes that led to emergence of Prof Salami as OAU VC was not faulty, he said “Those that went to NUJ chapel Osogbo only went there to give their own opinion not the Position of ASUU congress, they cannot upsurp decision of ASUU congress, the position is that the process that led to emergence of Prof Salami was not faulty.”
It will be recalled that the announced VC, Prof Ayobami Salami did not comment on the issues surrounding his emergence saying he would speak when the time is right.
A federal High court sitting in Osogbo is however set to deliver judgment on the legality of Prof Salami’s emergence as Vice Chancellor of Obafemi Awolowo University on Friday, 17th June 2016
